The use of composite materials in engineering is not a new phenomenon but it has always been restricted to high end, high value applications. This was supported by low volume and manual manufacturing processes.
The drive to reduce weight to improve efficiency in the automotive, aerospace and marine industries is forcing the use of composites in to the mainstream markets. Development in manufacturing techniques and process speed is key to the success of this.
At P.J. Hare we understand this need for flexibility both in a development and production environment. Our range of advanced control presses enable the press to be set to your requirements quickly and simply by use of the recipe management system.
By utilising the latest servo motors and drive technologies through strong relations with our supply partners, Hare can offer force, position and speed control within the press solution. Our easy to use but powerful recipe system allows for full control throughout the pressing process including outgassing steps if required.
Data logging is key to understanding your process and providing evidence for quality control. Hare presses allow this to be controlled through the recipe system giving flexibility to set sampling rates appropriate to your application or component process.
Hare composite press range can be supplied with or without heated platens with temperatures up to 450 degrees Celsius. Heated platens are ideal within the development process as no complex tooling is required meaning tool and process development is quick.
In a production environment it is often more desirable and efficient to utilise heated tools. Hare presses can interface to your tool heater or even control the heating elements directly from within our control system, removing the need for additional heating controls, saving floor space and giving operators a single interface.
Hare Composite presses have been used successfully in the following applications:
- Pre-formed layup compression moulding
- Resin transfer moulding
- Sheet mould compound compression moulding
- Bulk moulding compound compression moulding
Design and Construction
Hare Composite presses range in force from 1 tonne to 600 tonnes force. The column construction allows for easy access to the working areas of the press whilst maintaining a sturdy, robust machine. The design and construction allows for machines to be sited directly onto floors with no special requirements for loadings. The weight of the press is the only load transferred to the floor.
Where larger strokes and daylights are required, Hare’s elegant design allows for collapsing of the press for transportation and installation. Once on site the press is simply erected and positioned in situ minimising installation and commissioning times and getting your press actively producing quicker.
For presses with larger platen areas parallelism is key to a good quality part. Hare composite presses utilise the latest synchronous servo technologies along with multiple cylinders in a balanced hydraulic system to ensure the moving platen is always optimally positioned.
Platen sizes range from 300mm x 300mm up to 3000mm x 2000mm with strokes up to 1000mm. Smaller stroke presses can be up-stroking or down-stroking with larger presses only available in a down-stroking variety.
Compressed air or water cooling is also available.
